"a cultural region in the eastern United States that stretches from the Southern Tier of New York state to northern Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.
As of 2005, the region was home to approximately 23 million people.
Since its recognition as a distinctive region in the late 19th century, Appalachia has been a source of enduring myths and distortions regarding the isolation, temperament, and behavior of its inhabitants." [source]

Foggy morning in the Red River Gorge, KY by Ulrich Burkhalter on Flickr.“We went early this morning to catch the sunrise over the fog at Sentimi Point…..
But when the sun finally showed up at 10 AM it was to burn off the fog !!!!
The Mountain Laurels were just starting to bloom and bud out.”

This is where I grew up. It’s called West End and it’s located in Williamson, WV (Mingo County). Something that always hits me when I drive back into town after being away is that the closer I get, the more familiar the mountain formations become. I’m so connected to the landscape of that the familiarity of the mountains brings out the feeling of home more so than my own house even. Unfortunately though, the area has been depleted terribly. Along this strip in West End lies a bar, a methadone clinic/church hybrid, three car dealerships and a mortuary. So, you can grab a drink pick up your methadone prescription while taking in the sermon, get a new car and drive it to your own funeral. The cycle is perpetual.
